Recruiting in Second Life
By: David R. D’Angelo
I jumped at the chance to write a guest post for Jim Stroud’s “The Recruiting Lounge” on Recruiting in Second Life. I am far from being an expert but I am always amazed at what organizations clearly see the value of Second Life. My blog, Recruiting in Second Life, attempts to follow the latest developments in those recruiting in this virtual realm.
When I discuss the possibilities of recruiting in Second Life with others in the recruiting world I inevitably …

Racial Politics In The Workplace
Why am I called African-American when I’ve never been to Africa in my life? Karen and Jim both want to know. Should companies be compelled to create prayer rooms for their employees? (Its almost happening in the UK.) And if I am checking my blackberry in the check out line, I should get paid for it. If you use a company phone to send text messages, does the employer have the right to read them? (The answer may surprise you.) All this, plus, a few shameless plugs for …

Jim Stroud 2.0 » Search Engine Taste Test: Summize Searches Tweets
I have been working on Resume Forensics 2.0 (Are you on my update list?) and coming up with lots of neat tools and tricks. Well, one of my discoveries is the search engine - Summize.

What makes Summize cool is that is a search engine for Tweets. Here are a few things I have been using it for.
1. Looking for software developers (aka Geeks) skilled in Ruby on Rails. I simply type in key terms “ruby rails” and (as shown by the screenshot below) I discover a list of Tweeters who are discussing Ruby on Rails. (Go figure…) …

Jim Stroud 2.0 » A quick meet, then back to tweets
I interrupt this special week of Tweeting, to post a note about an Online Recruitment Survey that I was supposed to mention prior to my “One Solid Week of Tweets” experiment. (Sorry). Well, this is the deal…
How relevant are Online Job Boards these days? How many qualified candidates do you actually find on these Job Boards? And howzabout those pricing models? Do they work for you?
Well, I want to know and (I imagine) you do too? So click here to fill out the Online Recruitment Survey. Once the votes are in, I will share the results …

Jim Stroud 2.0 » One Solid Week of Tweets
If you are going to recruit using Social Media, I suggest that you add Twitter to your strategy. Why?
2 reasons:
Its popular and where people are, so are passive prospects. See previous comment.

In case you are not aware of it, I Tweet. Maybe not as much as some, but I do my fair share. In case you are scratching your head as to what I mean, I am referring to Twitter. What is Twitter? I think Wikipedia describes it better than I ever could.
Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users …

CyberSleuthing! | ERE Blog Network » Sourcing prospects from local events
Local events are a fantastic source of leads for prospects in fields where there is otherwise little online footprint. For example, in fields such as Accounting, Finance, Nursing, Law and Medical, among others, you may find individuals who occasionally blog or participate in online communities, but such individuals are not as plentiful as in other industry sectors.
Many continuing education companies employ local experts to teach recertification courses. These courses can be found online but frequently behind dynamically generated content which makes it “deep webâ€ content not picked up buy regular search engines. However, the content of those …

CyberSleuthing! | ERE Blog Network » How to use Summize to source target company names from Twitter
Summize is a free conversation search engine that allows you to scan content posted on Twitter.com. While many of the 'twits' or posts on Twitter offer little clues or meaningful context, its possible to extrapolate a few juicy tidbits of information. One such example is when people use the phrase 'I work for' followed but the name of a company. This is a great technique on any search engine but its particularly useful on blog search engines because people love to talk about themselves. With Twitter being a microblog (only 140 characters allowed in a post) the brief comments … [Link]
Jim Stroud 2.0 » Weblin is the Shiznit! Get yours now…
Due to the proliferation of social networks, there has been a lot of talk about data portability lately. In a nutshell, data portability means that I could have one account for several online webservices. For example, if I was logged into my Facebook account and decided to hop over to MySpace, I would not have to log in all over again. If you have multiple accounts on multiple Social Networks and other sites, you immediately recognize how convenient this can be. Enter Google’s Friend Connect.
Google’s “Friend Connect” is a big deal, a very big deal. Friend Connect allows users to …

Jim Stroud 2.0 » How To Get Your Business On Google, Yahoo and MSN Maps
I was looking for a Pizza joint nearest to my friend’s house and decided to use Google Maps to find it. Shortly after finding the information I wanted, I started to wonder how many resumes could I find on a local search. How many? Not so much…
I then began to wonder to myself, “Self, if you had a Staffing Agency, would you come up in a search on Google Maps?”
Well, I do not own a Searchfirm, but I was curious all the same. So, I did a search on Staffing, Recruiting and Executive Search, just to see what was …

Jim Stroud 2.0 » Is eAnnouncer a cool tool or a spammer’s dream?
Have you ever had the need to mass email several candidates? Well, if so, I have a cool tool for you to download. I have used it for multiple projects and it works seamlessly. The tool is called - eAnnouncer and it is a plugin for Microsoft outlook.
Here is a quick tutorial of how it works (ripped off from the company homepage). These directions apply (of course) after you have downloaded and integrated the product.
1. Start Outlook and create a new mail message.
2. When you’re done composing the message, click the “Announce” button on the toolbar.

Lies, Discouraged Workers and “H1-B only” Jobs
Karen is ecstatic when she is right and Jim can only grin and bear it. Did you know that there was a minimum wage for IT Workers? (Jim didn’t know either.) Want a government spanking? Advertise a job for H1-B candidates only. (Duh! What were they thinking?) Fussing, fighting and general bickering occurs between Karen and Jim, but how is that different from all of our shows? Plus, belated birthday wishes for Jim. Hear it all now on - The Recruiters Lounge podcast.
